We’re 8 weeks into looking at the overwhelming theme of belief in the 4 Gospels. Matthew jumps right into it with two stories of belief in chapter 8. “A leper came to Him (Jesus) and bowed down before Him, and said, “Lord, if You are willing, You can make me clean.” Jesus stretched out His hand and touched him, saying, “I am willing; be cleansed.” (v.2-3) Did you see it? “you can” This guy had no doubt that Jesus could heal him. He didn’t even really know Jesus but he chose to believe anyway.
The next story involves a centurion soldier, “”Lord, my servant is lying paralyzed at home, fearfully tormented.” Jesus said to him, “I will come and heal him.” But the centurion said, “Lord, I am not worthy for You to come under my roof, but just say the word, and my servant will be healed.” (v 8-9) Did you see this one? “will be” This man believed that if Jesus was involved his servant would be healed.
May those two statements, “(Jesus) you can” and “(whatever you say Jesus) will be” stick with us this week as day-to-day life tries to convince us otherwise. Our God is active and available to all who believe.
