It’s been quite a few years since the WWJD bracelets, head bands, t-shirts and the like came out, but the question, “What Would Jesus Do”, still haunts many of us.  After all, we are society of doers, so naturally the formula of figuring out what Jesus would do in a given situation makes sense.   The problem is there is no way that we could figure out in every situation what Jesus would do.  It’s impossible!  We quickly tire ourselves out trying to do what Jesus would do.  What if the questions was not,  “What Would Jesus Do?”, but instead,  What is Jesus Doing? (WIJD) I’m printing up the bracelets as I type…

Seriously though, what if we asked the question, what is Jesus up to, first, in our own lives, and then in the lives of others?  What does he have planned for my life today, what does he want to say to me today?   What is He inviting into in the lives of others today?  The only way we can know what He is up to is to surrender ourselves to His Spirit.   The Evil One knows how to tempt with busyness and urgency, and far too often we fall into the trap of attempting to be successful instead of striving to be faithful.  Dietrich Bonhoeffer gives a sobering word about the importance of being alone with the Spirit.   “If you refuse to be alone you are rejecting Christ’s call to you, and you can have no part in the community of those who are called.”

What is Jesus Doing?  We need only ask Him and stay still long enough to hear Him speak.
