It’s so tempting to brag about things we know, power we have and money we make. Most of the time, it’s not a blatant brag, but instead a subtle reminder to others that we have wisdom, power and $. It comes out in the stories we tell, the way we introduce ourselves, in our posture.
Jer 9:23-24 says,“Don’t let the wise boast in their wisdom,
or the powerful boast in their power,
or the rich boast in their riches.
24 But those who wish to boast
should boast in this alone:
that they truly know me and understand that I am the Lord”
Identity for us as men often comes from our jobs. It’s all too easy to let that define us, instead of going to the Lord for our value. Of course, wisdom, power and riches are tightly intertwined with our vocation. Our job provides the platform for the kind of boasting that Jeremiah warns against.
So what is it ok to boast about: that we know God, and understand that He is in control of our lives. That’s it! Not know about God, but knowing Him and continue to get to know Him more and more. That’s the only type of boasting that will get us anywhere in this life.
