What is the true Christmas message? Is it Luke 2? “There were in the same country, shepherds keeping watch over their flocks by night… and you will find a babe, wrapped in swaddling clothes and lying in a manger” It’s a great beginning, but it’s not the central message. It makes for a good intro to the story, but I don’t believe it was ever God the Father’s intention for us to focus in on the baby Jesus. Don’t get me wrong, I love all that we do to celebrate and honor Jesus during this season of Advent, but just focusing on the baby Jesus is like watching the opening scene to the best movie you have ever seen and then turning it off.
The Gospel, the GOOD NEWS, the GREAT NEWS is that the MESSIAH, THE SAVIOR OF THE WORLD showed up. The one Isaiah prophesied about, the one who John the Baptist lead the way for came. I don’t mean to harp on Luke, I really do appreciate the detail of the birth of Jesus, but the real Christmas message is summed up much more beautifully with these words: “The Word became flesh and dwelt among us.” (Jn 1:14)
God showed up in the form of a human baby offering us life to the fullest. He left the manger behind and walked this earth doing exactly what he said he would do. He is our Savior!
