Anna and I got away with the kids for Memorial Day weekend. One of the evenings after the kids were in bed we watched the movie, “Taken”. Talk about intense! If you haven’t seen it yet, not only do I recommend it, but you might want to quit reading here. When his daughter gets taken, a whole underground world of evil is exposed. As soon as Liam Neeson’s character finds out what has happened to his daughter, the pursuit is on. His character does not sulk or say “Why me”, he simply recognized the evil right away and gets involved in the restoration of goodness.
“If you make the Lord your refuge, if you make the Most High your shelter, no evil will conquer you. (Ps 91:9-10a) The Psalm doesn’t say that evil won’t come, it doesn’t say Satan isn’t lurking, what it says is that we will not be conquered by it. The reality is that the Evil One is hard pressed to take us out of the game. Is goal is to keep us from growing in relationship with God, and with every other person in our lives. Divide and conquer is his goal, and his plan is much more evil even than the one in the movie.
The bottom line is that each of us is under attack every day. Our only hope for survival is to make the Lord our refuge. Every other attempt leads to a hollow life.
Prayer: Lord, remind me today that evil is upon me. Give me the strength to overcome it and the wisdom to make you my shelter. Amen
