Tempted Again???

If you followed along through Lent this year, we looked at addiction.  Here we are a few weeks removed from “Resurrection Sunday”, so how is it going?  If the Lord brought something to your attention during Lent, or is whispering to you today about something that distracts you, and you are tempted to give in, be encouraged!   What??? How can we be encouraged?  It’s very discouraging when old habits (addictions) come back and try to tempt us to give into our ways.  In my morning reading today one of the verses was 1 Peter 5:8-9:

“Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. Resist him, steadfast in the faith, knowing that the same sufferings are experienced by your brotherhood in the world.”

A couple of things jumped out at me.  First, “Be sober.”  We often use that word to describe someone who used to drink alcohol but now abstain.  This term “sober” can apply to any action that we take to say no to a temptation.  Second, I like that vigilant goes hand-in-hand in this verse with sober.  To be vigilant is to be on guard.  Lastly, is the reminder that the devil is prowling around seeking for people to devour.  Remember, this is Peter writing this AFTER the death and resurrection of Jesus.  Peter is acknowledging that even though the devil was defeated on the Cross, he still is seeking to “steal, kill and destroy” (Jn 10:10) the lives of people on earth.   More on verse 9 later this week…
