I mentioned in my last post to be encouraged if you are being tempted right now. Be encouraged because you have an Enemy and if you weren’t a threat to him he wouldn’t bother with tempting you. Earlier this week we looked at 1 Peter 5:8. Now to verse 9:
9 Resist him, steadfast in the faith, knowing that the same sufferings are experienced by your brotherhood in the world.”
As the devil is seeking to devour us (verse 8), Peter tells us that we have a part to play. Our first part is to “resist him.” How in the heck do we resist the devil? I believe the answer is in Peter’s next 2 statements. The way we resist the devil is by:
1) being steadfast in belief. In other words, believing the truth about what God says about us, and what he says about others. Believing the truth of Scripture and not giving into the lies that try to bombard our minds.
2) Knowing – by knowing that others have suffered temptation and made it through, and by knowing that Jesus has conquered sin and death once and for all.
Through believing and knowing the truth we resist the devil. Paul gives us a great template for resisting:
“For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does. The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ” (2 Cor 10:3-5)
