Ok, I realize that Sabbath is not a concept that is really even considered in today’s society, but it’s worth a second look. Isaiah gives us these words from the Lord to consider:
“Keep the Sabbath day holy. Don’t pursue your own interests on that day, but enjoy the Sabbath and speak of it with delight…” (Is 58:13)
First off, when is the Sabbath? Saturday, Sunday, another day? Secondly, how could I even have the time to “waste” a day each week. I am way to busy for that! Maybe once every other month, but I am way too important to give up one day a week.
Probably my favorite modern day example of taking the Lord’s words here to heart is Chick-Fil-A. My wife and I met the owners of this chain of restaurants a few years ago and got to hear the story of why they close their doors every Sunday. Before I get into their story, consider this reality for just a second. Chick-Fil-A is a fast food business that is competing with all others in the market and is giving up the most profitable day of business to honor the Lord. Hmmm.
As Bubby Cathy (owner) explained their rationale, it is quite simple. They take the Lord’s words to heart and honor Him by taking a Sabbath. They see it as honoring to the Lord, to their employees, and as an opportunity to allow others to see a prominent business that operates biblically. Bubba told us, almost with a very matter of fact posture, “The past few years we have done more business in 6 days than our competitors have done in 7.”
