Consistently praying for my friends has been an incredible thing that I have participated in the past 7 or 8 years. I remember when it began. I was on a walk with my friend Adam in the early days of our friendship and we began to pray for one another as we walked. When we finished I had the idea that I would pray for him each Friday in my morning time with the Lord. I have since moved him to Monday’s (I do alphabetical now that I have other friends I pray for), but I have continued this discipline of prayer for my friend.
It is amazing to pray for a friend consistently and to get to be part of the process of that person becoming more like Jesus. It is so fun to see prayers answering and to walk with a brother through the ups and downs of life. Now that I have multiple friends that I pray for each week, I know that many of them pray for me on a consistent basis as well. John Eldredge and his team developed a daily prayer that I have prayed for the past number of years and I really appreciate how they end the prayer. “Father, thank you for those who pray for me, I confess that I need their prayer. Rouse them, unite them, raise up the full canopy of prayer and intercession for me this day.”
Praying for our friends on a consistent basis allows us to get out of ourselves and consider others as important as we do ourselves. It has become a great practice for me in my journey with Jesus.
