“Prayer and Fellowship”, those were the words that came out of Connie’s mouth in a whisper Friday evening. He said them in a whisper because he could hardly speak. This past summer he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, and the past few weeks he has declined quickly. Art and I got to go and be with him aside his hospice bed on Friday. He was in a lot of pain and going in and out of consciousness, but he was able to speak those profound words to us that evening.
Connie is the founder of Teleios, the ministry I work with. He is a beloved brother, mentor and friend. It would take more cyberspace than is available for me to describe Connie, so I will let his words speak for themselves. “Prayer and Fellowship” encapsulate Connie more than any others that come to mind. I believe that he was saying to us that these are the most important things. Prayer: intimacy with God, and Fellowship: Intimacy with others. What a remarkable summation of Matt 22:37-38, “Jesus replied: ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. 38 This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’”
That evening Connie reminded us of what is central: relationship with God and relationships with people. As we head into 2011 we really only have two questions to ask: How will I grow in intimacy with God, and how will I grow in deeper friendship with others.
