Who isn’t interested in LIFE! I am not referring to the board game many of us played when we were kids. (We never could figure out how to keep that plastic wheel from spinning off its axis.) I am talking about the life that we all know is in us. Something in us knows that we were created for more, but we are not quite sure what “more” looks like.
So we make attempts. We try money, possessions, relationships, power, influence, activities, risk, you name it we try it. At the end of most of our attempts is disdain and fatigue. Jesus shows up right in the middle of all of our attempts and makes this statement, “It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing; the words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life.” (John 6:63) Hold up! Did I read that right? The Spirit is life. If that is the case then what is with all of my outward attempts at achieving life? This statement from Jesus leads me to believe that no matter how hard I try (even with good works), the only thing that will produce life, real life, is connection to the Spirit.
We want to short circuit the process of connecting with the Spirit, but there is no other way than to sit and allow the Spirit to do the work in us. At the end of Jesus’ speech many of his followers walked away. They thought he was offering something different, some easier version of life. “So Jesus asked the twelve, ‘You do not want to go away also do you?’ Simon Peter answered him, ‘Lord to whom else shall we go? You have words of eternal life.’”
