We live close to the University of Washington and most days I drive by the campus. It is amazing to see how many of the kids are walking to class with those little white ear buds in their ears. Media is a distraction for most of us, and college kids are the worst.
It makes sense. It’s scary to rest, just try it. Try sitting in silence for even 15 minutes. I once invited some guys to get away for the weekend on a camping trip. As we planned our trip they talked about who was going to bring the portable DVD player and who was going to bring the movies. When I questioned why they were talking about bringing along entertainment one of the guys responded, “I can’t stand silence. I don’t want to be alone with my thoughts. That’s too scary of a concept for me to swallow.” We are addicted to media because it is an easy check out and not think when we are listening to music or watching something on TV. If we don’t have to think then we are protected from considering the more important things in our lives. Media provides a great distraction for us, but it only keeps us from the very rest that our minds and hearts need.
Maybe we should consider a “media fast” as Holy Week approaches. It just might be what we need to get out of the rut of turning to other things besides to Lord to fill us.
