Rest and peace go hand in hand in the Bible. Jesus often talks about peace and with it he offers rest. “Peace I leave with you: My peace I give to you: not as the world gives do I give to you. Do not let your heart be troubled, nor let it be fearful.” (Jn 14:27)
The world offers us unrest and worry, while Jesus offers us peace. What a contrast. Unfortunately, we often chose the ways of the world over the ways of Jesus leading us to a state of fear and trouble. Jesus tells us to not allow our hearts to be troubled. In our current economic environment how do we do that? Don’t we have to work harder and strive more in order to just keep our heads above water? So how to we accept this offer of peace from Jesus? It requires us to stop and rest long enough to lean into the reality that He has us. Jesus, the author or peace is on our side. We need not let our hearts be troubled or give into the temptation of fear.
We must carve out space in our lives to rest if we are to enter into this life of peace that Jesus speaks of. His offer is to all who dare to stop and let him do the great work in each of us.
