In Matt 11:28, Jesus gives us an incredible invitation: “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” Jesus is the provider of rest. He invites us into life with Him knowing that part of walking with Him is resting. So what is he getting at in Matthew 11? Eugene Peterson provides great insight into this same verse for us.
“Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life.”
Rest is about recovering our life. The life that God has for us is a life spent walking with Him. This calm life of rest is what we were initially created for. When Adam and Eve walked with God in the garden they were in a state of rest. God was in control. He took care of all of their provision. Man walked in intimate relationship with God and the result was true rest. That same rest is available to us today if we will consistently “come to Him.” The invitation is there, our part is to simply step into this rest that He offers.
As we begin today, accept this generous life-giving invitation. All of us are weary and heavy-laden. That is the result of living in a fallen world. Accept the Father’s rest for today.
