In hopes to further the truth of yesterday’s post, the truth that we are loved by God, I am staying with a similar certainty today. “The Lord did not choose you because you were larger or greater….It was simply because He loves you.” (Duet 7:7&8) These words were for the Isrealites, but that is exactly who we are, God’s chosen. And He chose us not because of who we are or what we can do for Him, but because He loves us! It is not about performance – what we can do for God. It is not about gaining power, adding to God’s number of followers, or trying to talk someone into believing that Jesus is the way. It’s about being chosen by the Creator of all things, and slowly allowing that reality to change who we are.
The lie is that our primary “function” as children of God is to share God’s love with others. While that it a great privilege that we have, it is not our most important activity. Our prime activity is to recognize God’s love for us and go about our day as people who are fundamentally loved. Think about it, how do you act when you are truly loved and cared for by another person? I know for me it is a game changer for my day. When I feel loved by Anna, a good friend, or someone else, I operate very differently. Our reality is that we are loved at all times by the God who pursues us. He invites us into his love each day, throughout the day, not because of something we can do for Him, but because we are his sons and daughters.
Lie: Our primary role as children of God is to witness to others
Truth: The most important thing we can “do” for God is accept His love
