The Pharisees were confused about the Sabbath. They were all about rules while Jesus was all about relationship, and this cause a big problem for them. These men of the law wanted Jesus to fit into their way of doing life. The problem is that the Pharisees had created a way of doing life that did not involve God. Sound familiar?
Each of us has created a way of doing life that does not involve God. One of the easiest ways to get caught up in this is by neglecting rest. We get going on our own agenda and too easily forget that life is about relationship with God and others. Rest is required to return to a right way of living. When we rest we repent of our schemes of doing life on our own. When we take a break and listen to God we are reminded of how life is supposed to be lived. Jesus modeled right living for us: “Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed.” (Mark 1:35) Whether you are a morning person or not, this way of beginning the day is vital to experiencing the life that God has for us. We are wise to follow Jesus’ model if we desire to live life the way it was intended to be lived.
So, set you alarm to wake a little earlier than normal tomorrow. Get a scripture in front of you and rest in the Lord for a little while.
