Wow, half way through the 40 days of Lent! How are you doing with addiction? Have you identified a specific one(s)? The more research and study I am doing about addiction, the more I realize that I have temptations toward more than one addiction. A couple of suggestions if you are still trying to put your finger on your addiction(s), or wondering if you have others:
1) Ask the Lord. The Lord wants to reveal to us anything that is holding us back from living life fully. If there is anything in our lives that is hindering, He will let us know if ask Him.
2) Ask others. This takes a great deal of risk because we might not like the answer, but if we ask those closest to us, “What do you think are my addictions? Where do you see me turning in times of stress?
If you have identified an addiction(s), a good way to test it is to see if you have these physical and emotional withdrawal symptoms:
Emotional – Anxiety, Irritability, Sleeplessness, Headaches, Poor concentration, Depression, Social Isolation
Physical – Sweating, racing heart, muscle tension, tightness in the chest, difficulty breathing, nausea
Even if you aren’t having withdrawal systems to, say, addiction to your job, you may very well be addicted to it. That’s why it is great to ask the Lord and those closest to you about addiction. As human beings we have a tendency to justify our behavior and are often too involved in our own lives to see the damaging choices we are making each day. This process takes a lot of courage, but there is great hope on the other side of it.
