Matt 6: 22-23 says, “The lamp of the body is the eye. If your eye is sound, your whole body will be full of light. But if your eye is evil, your whole body will be full of darkness. If all the light you have is darkness, it is dark indeed!” So what are you focused on? What has your eye? Is it work, substance abuse of some kind, working out, lying to make yourself look good, recreation, lethargy? What is it that keeps you from living life to the fullest? What do you turn to in order to distract you from reality? What do you rely on to give you worth or satisfaction?
The only way for our “eye to be sound” is for our primary focus to be Jesus. Every other focus will leave us unsatisfied and craving for more. As you consider what this may be, ask two questions: What gets most of my energy? What do I turn to when things get hard?
Jesus’ desire for us is that we would have our eye fixed on him. Other things may seem like temporary light, but they lead to darkness.
