Monday morning, here we go into another week of Lent. Getting weary yet? I was weary last week, but hit a bit of a stride the last few days. I’m just hoping I don’t “peak” too early, it is Day 17 after all. If I get to feeling like I can’t make it these 40 (47) days I try to imagine what it must have been like for Jesus to go 40 days in the wilderness without food. My favorite line in the retelling of that story is from Mark 4:2 “After fasting forty days and forty nights, He was hungry.” That seems like a drastic understatement!
We may not be able to go 40 days without food, but fasting is as powerful tool that helps us connect to the Lord in a profound way. It can also be an amazing discipline to aide in breaking addiction. God designed us so intricately and knows that when we abstain from food our longing for harmful things diminishes. The hope is that the crazing of food would build into us a craving for God. After Jesus’ 40 day fast, Satan first tempted him with bread. Jesus’ reply, “It is written: ‘Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.'” (Matt 4:4)
Lent is a time of fasting. Whether we choose to abstain from food for a short time period during Lent, Satan’s temptation will still come to us. What is he tempting you with as you begin a new week? May the words that come from the mouth of God sustain you.
