Lent Day 13: “I Pledge Allegiance…”

Something will get our allegiance, it’s just that simple.  Ether we give into the desires of our flesh or we submit ourselves fully to God.  Paul says to the church in Galatia,

“For the sinful nature desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the sinful nature. They are in conflict with each other, so that you do not do what you want.”

We all have a sinful nature, and that is where our tendency toward addiction is born.  However, if the Spirit is in us and we are fully submitted to Jesus, allegiance to Him will win out over temptation to follow our addictions.  In order for this to be the case, we have to believe the truth that the Spirit in us wins out over our temptation to turn to addiction when things get tough.  I don’t know about you, but this is hard to truly believe.  In the moment of weakness when the method of addiction seems like the way to go, it is almost impossible to see the bigger picture.  But there is a much bigger picture!  Our souls have been won, and our only true source of strength is the Spirit within.
