Here we go, Day 1 of taking a look at addiction. That word has such a negative connotation. As soon as we see the word, or someone uses it in conversation, our first internal reaction is often, “Whew, I’m glad I’m not an addict.” Well, during this Lenten season we have some things to explore together.
The three big addictions in our society today are: Alcohol, Drugs and Pornography. You might be surprised to learn of other common addictions:
Food, Sex, Internet, Caffeine, Video Games, Work, Exercise, Shopping, Media
There are other addictions, but these are some main categories to get us started. What is it for you? What do you turn to in order to “handle” your day or the stress of your life? OR what is it that you turn to as a distraction from your current life situations? These are not easy questions to answer, but they are vital is we are to experience the full freedom that Jesus has for us.
Jesus said, “I came that you may have life and have it to the fullest.” That word fullest in the Greek is: περισσὸν, which means remarkable, superabundance, excess. That is Jesus’ hope for us. That we would experience a superabundant life! Is your life remarkable and superabundant? Are there things that are holding you back? Me too. Let’s go through Lent together and see where Jesus takes us.
