“Restore to me the joy of your salvation” Ps 51:8
Four times in the first 15 verses of Ps 51, joy is mentioned:
Oh give me back my joy again. (v8); Let me rejoice (v8b); Restore to me the joy of your salvation (v12); Then I will joyfully sing of your forgiveness (v14)
It appears that joy is our natural state. We don’t think of it that way, however. We tend to think that something special needs to happen for us to experience joy. The Psalmist hints to us that joy is lost when we stray from God, and restored when we return to Him. In other words, right relationship with God = joy.
So, how do we return to a state of joy? repentance and confession. “cleanse me…wash me”(v7). By carving out time today to repent and confess, my joy is restored. One man said it this way, when describing his daily time with Jesus, “I come here each morning to remember who I am.” Who I am, who you are is a man full of joy because of God’s salvation. Ongoing relationship with the Father keeps us in a state of joyfulness.
Prayer: Father forgive me. I come before you this morning in confession asking for your forgiveness. Return me to a state of joy once again. Amen
