There is a lot of reason for despair in our world today. We need only tune into the television or log onto the internet to see the upheaval in our culture. Wars, unadulterated sin, injustice, lack of hope and pessimism are the themes of the day. We are subtly convinced to join the belief that our best days are behind us and that we are only left to endure what is to come.
According the John the Baptist in Luke 3, Jesus was the son of Jesse. I thought David was the son of Jesse. What’s going on here? In John’s lineage that he presents in Luke 3 we see a blood line from Jesus to David and beyond. David was referred to as a man after God’s own heart. One of my favorite statements of David in the Psalms is, “I would have despaired unless I had believed that I would see the goodness of the LORD In the land of the living.” (Ps 27:13) The question for us today is do we believe that we will see the goodness of the Lord? Will his goodness overcome evil? If we only look at the circumstances of the day we can easily become discouraged. David was on to something with his line of thinking. He looked beyond what was in front of him and believed that the Lord would prevail. We would be wise to align our thinking with this man who too was the son of Jesse. May our belief echo his as we go out into our day today.
