Speaking of relationship, this brings us to Jesus’ second point, “concerning righteousness.” Righteousness can be a confusing term to get our head around. This word began to jump off that page at me when I started using a different interpretation of it: right relationship. The Holy Spirit was sent to restore right relationship. We were all created to be in relationship with God. Not a peripheral relationship, but the primary relationship in each of our lives. The Holy Spirit points us toward this relationship and prevents any other relationship from fulfilling our deepest desire. Our only true desire is Him.
Jesus’ last comment about the Holy Spirit involves the judgment of Satan. The Holy Spirit is in us to remind us that the Evil One has been judged, cast down. Before we get too far ahead of ourselves and dismiss the work of the Evil One totally, we must take Peter’s words to heart. Keep in mind that he spoke these words AFTER the resurrection of Jesus. “Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.” (1 Pet 5:8) Even though Satan has been defeated, he still comes after us with the hopes of taking as many of us with him to the pits of hell as possible. His mission is to Kill or spirit, Steal our Joy and Destroy or Lives.
