You know someone has had a profound impact on your life when you find yourself often asking, “What would __________ do in this situation?” I have been doing that for the past 16 years with Chuck. Whether it is a personal situation, family instance, friendship, ministry scenario or spiritual matter, I ask myself that question often.
About a year after I met Chuck I was reading the latest and greatest Christian physchology book. I was attempting to figure out why I was the way I was, and how to change for the better. Chuck saw that book in my pickup and offered a suggestion. “You know Shawn, I have seen a Christian counselor and different times during my life to help me walk through the deep waters. It has been an invaluable tool for me.” My first reaction, although I didn’t say it out loud, “Is he serious! Counseling is for weak people who can’t figure out life on their own.” A few weeks after that, my life came crashing in on me and Chuck introduced me to Mary, who would become another great mentor in my life.
I have merely scratched the surface this week with a few posts about my friend Chuck. He has taught me so much, and I continue to be inspired and spurred on by his life. The most significant thing that Chuck has done for me, and many others, is point me to Jesus. He was not the first to do so, but he opened my eyes to what walking with Jesus through every day life looks like. I am so grateful to the Lord for the gift of Chuck’s friendship and mentorship in my life.
