Either I am reading the Scriptures wrong, or the whole church sign idea is just not biblical. To start, the fact that there is even a “sign on the corner” is way off from the teachings of Jesus. As one of my friends and I talked about this he said, “Jesus has an idea of the kinds of things his followers should do on “the corners” and it’s NOT pharasitical stuff like prayer and church signs…. it’s to go out on the street and simply invite everyone into the grand banquet of the kingdom.
there’s a HUGE difference!”
Matt 22:9-10 says: Go to the street corners and invite to the banquet anyone you find.’ 10So the servants went out into the streets and gathered all the people they could find, both good and bad, and the wedding hall was filled with guests.
The other troubling thing about church signs is what is written on them. This is a quote from one of the sites that offers ideas for church signs, “Read by millions of spiritually hungry people each every day, the church sign presents an unequaled opportunity to communicate concise yet profound messages of God’s love to the world.” Unequaled… wow! God’s love?… not sure about that.
So, what we are left with is signs on the corner communicating bad theology and trying to guilt people into church.
|“Beat the Christmas rush, come to church this Sunday!” I’m sure that will get em pouring in! More to come on this…
