Christmas was the beginning of the greatest rescue mission of all time. As we know, there are two opposite forces that are at work in our world: God, the creator of everything, and Satan, the head of the evil forces. They are both fighting for us. God is fighting to offer us a chance at real life, and Satan and his soldiers are trying to destroy us, and convince us that we can live life apart from our creator. This battle between God and Satan went on for 100’s and 100’s of years, until finally God decided it was time to make his move. God made himself into a baby and showed up on earth and the evil forces were outraged. (the first Christmas was anything but peaceful). Listen to this:
13Now when they had gone, behold, an (E)angel of the Lord (F)appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, “Get up! Take the Child and His mother and flee to Egypt, and remain there until I tell you; for Herod is going to search for the Child to destroy Him.”
14So Joseph got up and took the Child and His mother while it was still night, and left for Egypt.
The villan, Satan, knew that Jesus was going to try to offer us real life and that’s the last thing the he wanted to happen. So he and his troops warred for years, pulled out all the stops and did all they could to get rid of Jesus. This battle was won when Jesus conquered death.
Our encouragement during this third week of advent is to live into this reality. This child that we wait for with anticipation has come for us. As Ex 15 tells us: The LORD is a warrior! The LORD is his name! May we let him rescue us this Advent season.
