God came here, to earth. This same earth you and I live on. 2000 years ago, the Creator of all of this, of you and me, showed up. That doesn’t make any sense, why would he do that… he’s God? He can do anything he wants, have anything he wants, experience anything he wants and what does he choose to do… Make himself into one of us, his created people, climb inside the womb of a virgin girl and be born as a baby. Not only did God come near, not only did he come here in the form of one of us, his created people, but he chose to be born in a barn, drawing no attention to himself. He chose to live the life of a commoner, to go through all the struggles that you and I go through. He chose rejection, abandonment, excitement, joy, disappointment, laughter. He chose relationship.
You know one of the main reasons he came…to provide rest. Who doesn’t need rest. I’m not talking about sleep, I’m talking about rest. If there is anytime in the history of people, in 2009 we are a people that need rest, real rest. You and me, we need a break from life, and that is precisely one of the reasons God came near, it is precisely one of the main reasons that God came here. Listen to this: “Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me—watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly.” (matt 11:28-30 msg)
If that’s not a Christmas message to us, I don’t know what is. May we rest in Jesus today.
